Subject: Run Flat Tires

My experience with the Bridgestone 205/55 R16 EL42 (RFT) Run Flat Original Equipment Tires on my new 2006 325i, has been very disappointing to say the least! After experiencing a low tire pressure warning light, I immediately drove at a speed below 45 MPH to a BMW dealer close by, actually less than 9 miles away. I drove very conservatively as well, going slowly around corners, etc.

Imagine my surprise when I was told that any Run Flat Tire that has been driven in a low tire pressure condition such as when it is leaking air and going flat - supposedly what it was desiged to do) is not repairable! No matter if it is a slow leak, or slight nail puncture that caused the Low Tire Pressure Warning light to illuminate, or how short a distance it was driven in that condition.

The tire must be replaced according to BMW. Which I did, at a cost of $229.34. A Brigestone Tire Dealer I contacted also confirmed this procedure. I have to tell you, I like most other BMW owners I think, would much rather pay for a tire repair, than buy a new tire every time one starts to go flat!

Oh for the old days (last year), when we had a real spare tire, wheel, a jack, and wheel nut wrench!

This is progress.....not in my view! BMW is going backwards instead of forwards. This is my third BMW, and very likely my last one. If I had known in advance of this problem with the OE Run Flat Tires on the new 3 Series cars, I would never have purchased one!
