Hopefully this could save someone else some hassle but the parts above worked perfect in my e39 2000 540i no Nav, with DSP.

However, at first there was a problem where the call was not being played back on the car's speakers. It took a bit to solve, but in the end the solution was very simple, just take a short bit of wire and jumper the center console 18pin connectors pins 11 and 14.
