Subject: Strange failure on a MKII system - 2000 740i - Help Appreciated

A couple of weeks ago, when I got in my 2000 740i and started it up the screen on my MKII Nav indicated that there was an issue loading/booting from the CD in the unit. It indicated that the software was the wrong version. I have been using this same CD since 2006 with no issues.

Once the message went away, the system came up to the On Board Computer (OBC) screen - where is lists consumption, limit, etc. - and was frozen. No buttons on the in-dash unit worked but the volume buttons on the steering wheel did.

I turned the car off, ejected the disk from the Nav unit and reinserted.
When I cranked the car back up, all was well... for a while. A few minutes into my drive and 'no mas.' Again, NO buttons (including the volume knob) on the dash worked but the steering wheel buttons did.

Since, I have not seen the error message but the unit has been stuck in this same state; and now, only the volume buttons on the steering wheel work - the radio tune up/down buttons do not.

I have disconnected the battery and removed / unplugged the Nav CD unit, let it sit for over 24 hours, reconnected everything, all to no avail.

Currently I have no way of getting to or controlling Nav, setting the time & date (disconnection of battery reset these to dashes, of course) and no way of listening to anything but one radio station (thank goodness it's the freq. of my portable XM player!) - or even a way to turn it off!

Has anyone had an issue like this before, or have any suggestions on how to get it back? Think my Nav CD player has bit the big one, or worse - the DSP unit?

Please, any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Cheers & thanks in advance,
Chuck

Cheers,
Chuck
