Brian, your explanation is invaluable. Mine has been out for a couple of years and the dealer said $3500 or so (more than I can afford for this). I have started to lose the love for my car due to this and the attitude of BMW customer relations. Now I have another option that is affordable and might rekindle the relationship.

I am now documenting more cases of this defective part (PlaueMD@hotmail.com), and as it shouldn't be a wear and tear item, DEFECTIVE appears to be the right term. The critical role this component plays for numerous electronic systems and the CONSISTENT FAILURE suggest that the manufacturer should have responsibility to address. This is not a Yugo. If the dealers had to explain this whole system was likely to fail in 4-5 years when the car was sold new, the $70K price tag would be called into question.

Any additional thoughts or comments regarding this, since you have provided such a GREAT solution, would be appreciated.
