I do not know your year but, You do not have to remove the entire dash... infact I think you can get at it by removing the glove box and the plastic associated with that area, At most you have to remove the complete center console... which only take about 1.5 hrs if it is your first time.

As far as cleaning it I assume that your drier decided to come apart... If that is the case you will need to pull the evaporator and condenser out hand have the tubbing cleared.. this is usually accomplished with alcohol and a sponge ball with a little air. The other option is to put a filter (fine wire mesh) right before the expansion valve and accept the fact thatoyu will need to clean it a few times, The rest of the system will not care so much about the drier debris moving around the system.

91 325iC (US) 190,000 miles saved my life but gave its own (T bone to drivers door at 45 mph)
94 325iC (US) 160,000 miles
98 750iL (US) 180,000 miles
01 325i (US) 30,000 miles
Now you know why I drive BMWs it is not about the money it is not about the glamor they save lives, they drive exceptionally well, and they last forever.
