run just enough to get the pressure up to the cooling stage then the low pressure switch cut the compressor off & the system blows hot air.it's also possible that it is going off on the high pressure switch but this is less likely but since you just bought the car you really don't know. The suction pressure on an 80 degree day should be around 35 psig w/ the unit on high windows open & idling at approximately 1500 rpms. Get a Haines A/C book at your local auto parts store or WalMart.Remember if you don't know what you are doing you can get seriously hurt. The refrigerant is under 300 plus lbs pressure on the high side & it WILL freeze your body parts faster than you ever believed they could be. That include eyeballs.
