My girl has the courtesy footwell lighting in her Acura.

It has an independent switch next to the illumination dimmer dial.

So you can have it on or off and choose the brightness.

The circuit is only powered when the parking or headlights are on. That's how I'd like to do mine. I'll most likely go with an amber bulb to match the rest of the interior illumination.

I have 6" Amber LED strips wired into the interior illumination in my E39 in the footwells and I love it.
