Subject: I forgot to mention: 1.02 lateral gs

That was the peak, transient, lateral (side-to-side) "g" reading I got during one of the runs.

No, I don't have a g-tech performance meter. I almost bought one a few months ago, but now I'm glad I didn't. Instead, I bought a phone.

Ok, I was going to buy an iPhone anyway, but after I did, one of the first apps I installed is something called Dynolicious. It's basically a g-tech-style performance meter that uses the built-in 3-axis accelerometers in the phone to detect and record 0-60, 1/4 mile, etc etc elapsed times and mph, and given the car's weight, calculates HP. Plus it's got a "skidpad" mode that shows you real time and max lateral, braking, and acceleration g's. It costs $12.99, a bit cheaper than the gtech.

What it lacks is the ability to record a lap, but I emailed them and they said they're working on a new version what will combine the GPS signal and record g forces along with the car's position on the track.

I'm in the process (I use that term lightly, progress is very slow nowadays) of building a good mount for the phone on the console. Then it will be much easier to get good 0-60 times and such.

While trying it out (just holding it down with my hand) I got some lousy accel times, but then I wasn't in a good place to do a good launch. I did see 1.0gs of braking, though.

For the autoX, I used velcro to hold the phone to the console. I guess it worked well, but it's ugly. I don't like the usual stuff in the stores either, so I'll build my own.

There's another program for the iPhone called gMeter for $8.99 that also looks pretty good, I may try that one too once I get my mount built. It can email the results to my account, so I can import them into a spreadsheet and do graphs or whatever else.

Cool stuff.
