I have a 320d E46 which is tuned to 166BHP (M47 engine) and the performance is superb, will out pull many petro BMS in the important mid range at motorway speeds, yes a little more noise at strat up but when running and when warm it is very quiet. as for smoke, it is not bad, yes if you floor it at night when lights are behind you you can detect a haze of unburnt fuel but it does not Belch black smoke, and on normal driving there is nothing. I would not drive anything else, i get on mixed driving 45mpg and on a long run about 60mph. I have been told there was an issue with the Turbo on the revamped 2001 -2004) 150bhp diesel, where the Turbo was fragile. I have had no problems and at the moment at work drive the 330d, which is superb.
Diesel is good, Skin colour is not something that has crossd my mind, but when I last checked in the mirror I was a pinkish white but your colour should not even be an issue, get what you want....
