Overheating

i just bought a 528i 98 with 121000 miles on it last week. I just loved driving it and then just begun noticing everyone seems to be complaining about over heating problems and cracked heads. I am now scared to even drive that car now. I have used a 528e 96 for the past 6yrs and prior to that a 325e 87 which i had an accident with but i did not worry about these cars because they were so good. What is the best preventive measure to avoid overheating or a cracked head on this 528i 98?
