Either way Tom made this post and it has help out a few already.

The two catches are you have to be OK using the slower MK II computer and you have to be OK without aux input/Sirius as you'll use a round-pin radio module.

Most of the retrofit harnesses/instructions require the use of the MK3 or MK4 computers ($300-$750), the flat-pin BM-53 radio ($300-$450), and an revised antenna amplifier ($200).

I know many of you like to start with the latest and greatest, but here's how you can start with a lower budget while leaving room to upgrade to the latest features later. This will allow you to run the latest harness (flat pin radio, no provision for MK2 trimble) with older, inexpensive components. The harness is not cut at all, and the mods are easily reversible.

I figured I better memorialize this on the board before I can't read my notes anymore!

TO ADD PROVISION FOR THE TRIMBLE UNIT TO YOUR NAV HARNESS IF IT DOESN'T HAVE IT ALREADY:

what you'll need:
61 13 1 383 736 socket housing 12 pol
61 13 8 380 696 socket housing 4 pol
61 13 6 925 611 pin terminal 4 pol
61 13 0 005 198 (qty 3) pin contact
61 13 0 005 197 (qty 16) bushing contact

1) Pull pin 10 of your blue nav computer connector and place it in position 1 of the 696 housing.
2) Pull pin 1 of the blue connector and place it in position 3.
Pull pin 3 of you violet connector and place it in position 2 of the 696 housing.
3) Splice two bushing contacts to each pin contact.
4) Insert a pin contact into position 1 of terminal 611. Take one of the bushing contacts and use it to replace pin 10 that you removed from your blue connector. Take the other and put it in position 1 of the 736 housing (this is your trimble connector).
5) Put the next pin contact in position 2 of terminal 611. Take one of the bushing contacts and use it to replace pin 3 that you removed from your violet connector. Take the other and put it in position 7 of the 736 housing.
6) Put the last pin contact in position 3 of terminal 611. Take one of the bushing contacts and use it to replace pin 1 that you removed from your blue connector. Take the other and put it in position 8 of the 736 housing. You now have power to your trimble.
7) Take the remaining 10 bushing contacts and splice them in pairs to make 5 pairs with 1 contact on each end.
8) These will be used to make connection from the violet connector to the 736 housing (trimble connector). These are the pin combo's, the first of each pair being the violet connector, the second being the trimble connector: 8->2, 17->3, 18->4, 9->5, 16->6.

Even though BMW's connector housings say "uncoded" when you order them, I find that sometimes they are. You may have to use a file or dremel to remove the little coding protrusions so that they'll slide into your component. If you have to do this, be careful that you maintain proper orientation.

You now have a trimble connector added to your harness!

TO RUN A ROUND-PIN RADIO ON A FLAT PIN HARNESS:

What you'll need:
BHO-8590 "reverse radio adapter for BMW -2002" qty 2
BHA-9003 "radio adapter for BMW 2002+" qty 1
(these can readily be found on ebay - you need two of the 8590 because not all the pins are populated, and I haven't found where to get extra pins. The manufacturer would not provide individual pins)

61 13 6 913 635 (qty 2) pin terminal 6 pol
61 13 0 005 197 (qty 9) bushing contact
61 13 0 005 198 (qty 9) pin contact
* you'll need 2 more of the last 2 part numbers if you're running your telephone through your stereo rather than the dedicated speaker.

1) Remove as many pins from the BHO-8590 adapter as need to have 16 populated pins in the other (mine needed 4) and move them over. Position 17 can be left empty.
2) Splice the wires from the round pin adapter to the flat pin adapter in the following order, round->flat: 1->3, 2->2, 3->4, 4->10, 5->16, 6->1, 7->9, 8->7, 9->15, 10->11, 11->6, 12->8, 13->14, 14->5, 15->12, 16->13.
3) on your flat pin harness, pop out the black and white 12-pin sockets at the bottom and remove the covers. (don't worry about the colors, the black one has more wires than the white one - you won't mix them up).
4) Remove these pins from the black connector and place them in one of the 058 socket housings. 8->1, 7->2, 2->3, 1->4, 5->5, 6->6
5) Remove these pins from the white connector and place them in the other 058 socket housing. 9->1, 8->2, 2->3
6) Now, splice together each pin contact with a bushing contact so that you have 9 wires with a pin on one end and a busing on the other.
7) Insert 6 pin contact ends into one of the 635 pin terminals and insert the 6 bushing contacts into the 008 socket housing in the following positions: 1->2, 2->1, 3->7, 4->6, 5->10, 6->5.
8) Insert the 3 remaining pin contact ends into positions 1-3 of the other 635 pin terminal and insert the 3 bushing contacts into the other 008 socket housing in the following positions: 1->2, 2->1, 3->6.
9) Take the 008 socket housing with 6 wires and insert it into the right side (when looking from the wire-side) of the BHO-8590 adapter. The other goes on the left. Again, here, you may have to shave little "ears" off the end to make it engage smoothly. I don't remember the orientation of pin 1, but I remember that if you insert them and look from the other side, the numbers on both the 8590 adapter and the two socket housing will be right-side-up. Don't worry, there's no power circuits on the two 10-pin connectors so you won't damage anything if you get them upside down.
10) Plug each 635 pin terminal into its 058 socket housing with the same number of wires.
11) Plug the 8590 adapter into your round-pin radio module and the 9003 adapter into your flat-pin harness.

You now can run a round-pin radio on your flat-pin harness with CD, tape, and NAV audio passed correctly. If your car has the telephone signal, it will be on pins 3 and 4 of the black 12-pin connector on your flat-pin harness.
