Subject: Going by brand I'd go with Sharp over Sony right now.

Sony has not innovated anything in televisions since the Trinitron. Instead they put all of there marbles into PS3 and Blu-Ray technology. Sony is relying on Brand recognition alone right now in my opinion. Sharp has been innovating there LCD flat panels with each generation. Also Sharp is one of the few manufacturers that makes it's own glass. My advice would also to be to stay with LCD over Plasma if it's not a dedicated room. The scale of the screen you are buying 32" should garner great results up to 1080i. Plasma really shines at sizes over 60" and also draw more energy than LCD. Also you did not mention if both sets were 720p or 1080p? You only need 1080p if you are using Blu-Ray or a supporting gaming console. A 1080p set will also help in the up conversion process of older DVD's. Other than that save some bucks and go with a 720p set which will also do 1080i. Remember all US HDTV broadcast are only up 1080i.
