Did you open the relay? Was the coil open shorted.. contacts been hot? i find it hard to believe that the fuel pump relay went twice is such a short time... something is taking ti out. I wonder if that silver box is not the unloader realys... What are the dimensions if they are about 6"x6"X 1.5" that is probably the ECU in which case your friend then knows more about these cars then I do (at the very least he is bolder than I to jump certain pins in the ECU) if the box has a BMW part number on it you could use realoem.com to look up the part. Not ideling indicates to me that you may have too much fuel... which is posible if your friend wired the injectors so that they would stay open is the car smoking from the tail pipe.. can you smell raw gas from the tail pipe? Also check your voltage at the battery when the car is running and reved up it should not exceed 14V if the voltage is greater than 14V then the voltage regulator in the alternator is bad. The ECU may be shutting itself down (limiting your RPM) to keep protect it from frying due to the high potential and also this would explain why you are frying the fuel pump relay so quickly in the car. OR you mentioned the coil... if somehow the coil or the coil wire was discharging back to the primary side this could also explain why things are going wrong.... I'll email you with some particulars because I am about to expose some info that should not be made public...

91 325iC (US) 190,000 miles saved my life but gave its own (T bone to drivers door at 45 mph)
94 325iC (US) 160,000 miles
98 750iL (US) 180,000 miles
01 325i (US) 30,000 miles
Now you know why I drive BMWs it is not about the money it is not about the glamor they save lives, they drive exceptionally well, and they last forever.
