If you could post some pictures, that would help a lot. Totally remove the gray felt cover to reveal the modules (or lack-of) behind it.

I am guessing that you had the TV option, but not nav. My hunch is that your TV module is gone also. The TV module is the component that drives the front display. So, with that gone and your amp gone, you would have no display and no audio.

The amp is fitted directly behind the CD changer, and it has two plugs if you have the standard HiFi audio system, or it will have 3 plugs if you have the DSP system.

The TV module is immediately to the left of the CD changer. It has a blue plug and a white plug. So, look for those hanging.

Here is a picture of my 1998 740iL to indicate where the major parts are located. Yours should look pretty similar.
