The only way to release the glass is the lever to the right of the license plate. If it doesn't work you have a broken wire over the right gate hinge.
If the glass is popping when you unlock the driver's door you have a short. With the broken plate wire you have the potential for a very serious problem. I now know of 5 wagons that have fried the GM and RM as well as other components because wires shorted here. One went up in flames and another fried everything from the stereo, cluster and even the DME... both of those cars had to be written off.
Repair the harness ASAP.
