Subject: 525i transmission problems

Hello everyone! I am new here to the E34 side of the forum but I have posted before on the E32 forum. I have a European spec 1989 525i that I have recently purchased and on the short test drive that I took I found that the transmission does not want to shift out of first gear and it does not want to go into Park either. The indicator on the dash says the correct position of the selctor lever but the On Board Display does not read anything at all! Is it the DME? I am going to try to adjust the selector lever cable first and see what that does. The engine runs fine. Oh and by the way it has the analog clock and no OBC. Any help would be greatly appreiciated!!
