Subject: Re: Radio codes
Author: gaile : 1 post

New problem and I'm at my wit's end: The trunk on my 2002 Z3 is very stiff to close, and I left it slightly open one day. The battery died, first time ever. I was prompted to add the code when the battery was charged, but I discovered that when I bought the car (new) I had never been given the code for the radio in my dealership papers.

One dealer said they would have to pull the radio, but the screws were stripped (by my original dealer, in replacement the on-board computer twice, I assume), so I returned to the original dealer, whose guys looked up the code that they had in the paperwork, tried it several times and found it did not work. They sent email to BMW Headquarters, but the second code they were provided directly by BMW does not work, either. (Yes I am leaving the car on for at least an hour to get to the "Code Wait" state.)

My options, according to my dealer: Pay $200 for an independent repairman to repair my working radio. Either that, or, they suggest "just replace the radio." A radio that works perfectly but won't operate because no one can provide me the bloomin' code! This is like being told "The lock on your house front door is broken, you need to buy a new house."

I want to disable the bloomin' anti-theft device, but my dealer says they cannot do it, and all they can do is refer me to outside their dealership and warn me it will cost at least $200.

Any advice?
