Subject: Re: Another Vanos fixed - 500 miles later

I'm sorry for the late reply, but after ~600 city miles in addition to the miles posted after my long road trip, there was a definite increase in torque and power. I was wondering if the power increase was something that was questionably noticeable, like a placebo effect, or if it was explicitly obvious. I can fully tell you now that it was the latter; the engine definitely has more power with which to exercise itself.

I have a standard city (non freeway) commute that I follow five times a week both ways, just like a lot of people. There are a few hills and, irregardless of that, I know the route very well and more importantly how my car handles at some of the more important locations. When once my car used to accelerate slowly up a moderate incline from a stop, it now accelerates faster. When once my car would downshift to go up steep inclines, it now stays in gear and ascends them with power to spare, as can be evidenced by me pressing down on the accelerator harder than I used to. In major sweeping corners around which I drive in a spirited fashion, I find I can now accelerate out of them faster without having a sensation of bogging down the engine. Incidentally, my average MPG has experienced a pleasantly noticeably increase. Gone are the days when my fuel consumption wavered drastically from the freeway to the city, now replaced by a more stable one, no matter if I'm cruising or if I'm in stop-and-go traffic. The disparity between City MPG versus freeway MPG is now much less.

I must say that for even literally ten times the price, (say, for an independent mechanic to do the job) the Vanos fix would have been worth it. In general, the car just feels more powerful and solid. Thanks again Rajae. I've been fully recommending your seals to any that will listen and just helped to complete the fix for another e39 owner, this time a PhD from UCLA.
