feature provides is a way to use the residual heat in the engine to blow warm air into the car *after* parking it. In the e38, if the outside temp is below a certain number (like 50 degrees, or something like that), pressing the "REST" or "MAX" button in the HVAC control panel after the car is turned off will cause the car to circulate hot fluid through the heater core and run the cabin fan. It turns off automatically after 20 minutes.

This is particularly useful when you stop for gas and want to keep your passengers warm when the car isn't running.
