Don’t be sure it’s your vanos making the noise.

V8 engines are known for lifter ticking, but this sound is periodic and recognizable. I presume this is not the noise you have.

V8’s have also been experiencing a rattling noise that comes from the front of the head in the vanos area. It’s not clear what this noise is from since many have not tried to address it. We have heard back from a couple owners that this rattling was caused by a broken crankshaft chain tensioner. This is below the top of the head in the front, and not the second camshaft chain tensioner on top of the head between the two camshaft sprockets. Owners usually note the rattle coming from the passenger side head. This points more to the crankshaft chain tensioner since it’s on that side.

Some owners have reported a vanos code. This sometime goes away, or is solved by replacing the “adjuster unit” (vanos).
