I finally got the codes to blink. It showed 1261 which is fuel pump relay control. Now that I think about it, when the car is hard to start in the morning, I can hear some clicking and buzzing going on over behind the glove box which is probably the fuel pump relay that is located there on the other side of the firewall. I suspect this relay control is also the cause of the random loss of power while driving.

I changed out the mustard relay for the fuel pump but this did not fix the problem. From my research, I found that I probably need to change the white main relay as well. If that doesn't work then the ECU is probably the culprit.

Anyway, just wanted to give a quick update on status of this problem. I will order a new main relay and see if that does the trick but if it doesn't solve the problem, does anyone have a lead on a cheap replacement Motronic for an 89 525i?
