Subject: spark plug wire fit?

Hello. I recently made the decision to do all mainance myself on my 1990 535i (170K miles). First thing i did was new plugs.

When i removed the plugs the ignition wires took a lot of force to take off. When i got them all off I noticed that the tips of the sparkplugs had siezed to the connectors in the wires and in removing the wires from the head i had ripped them off the threads on the plugs. My first question is what caused this??? Last plug change was around 120K miles when i bought the car by a mechanic.

I went to the parts store and got new wires (OEM) to install with my new plugs. Upon installing i noticed the new wires seemed loose on the plugs in the head. How much force do you need to attach the ignition wires to the plugs? should they clip onto the metal connector on the plug? that doesnt seem like its possible but i didnt want to use too much force and risk breaking the sparkplug... the car runs good but im worried about having a bad connection between the wires and the sparkplugs.

sorry for such a novice question but the last car i changed plugs on was a honda civic a long time ago...
