I'm guessing here. Obvously so the engine can start quicker, and possibly something to do with the initial injector sequence.

Anything else?

I know the USA E39 M62 and E34 M60 won't run without a CPS but my ZA built ones I can unplug the CPS and the engine works just fine, that's why I was wondering about it's function. Also why would they be different?
