your front suspension arm its shaped a bit like an L shape one end is bolted to the hub assembeley (this is the part which the wheel and the brake disc is connected to the part that connects the two together is called a bottom ball joint, if you then follow the arm towards the middle of the car there is another ball joint that bolts on to the sub frame under the engine, there is then a 90 degree angle in the arm which then makes the arm point towards the rear or the car on the end of that arm there is a large round rubber bush which is fitted in a carrier which is bolted to the underside of the vehicle with two bolts this bush is the track controll bush. I take it you dont live in england but over here you can buy a pair of track controll arm bushes (one for each side)
for about 25 pounds. as for fitting them i am a mechanic by trade and have replaced many of these bushes any good mechanic can fit one of these bushes in about half an hour so to fit 2 should take around about an hour also a pair of front shocks for your vehicle should cost around 135 pounds for the pair a pair of rear shocks should cost you around 45 pounds theese are also gas shocks which will give a slightly firmer ride and more stability .as for fitting rear shocks should take no more than an hour to fit ( thats half an hour per side ) front shocks should take about an hour per side . one more bit of advice any work on your car that involves taking apart the suspension you will need to take the car to a tyre centre that is able to do 4 wheel alignment as the front and rear toe angles will probably need setting up and possibly the rear camber angles if you fail to do this be warned you may find yourself wearing out tyres in no time having the car set up properley will also transform the way the car drives also as i have found out lowering a bmw can cause more hastle than its worth my advice is stick to the standard height otherwise you will notice the front tyres always wearing out on the inside edge and possibly tyres rubbing on the wheel arches hope this helps you
