Subject: Trans Program followed by Overheating

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and hoping that someone will be able to shed some light on this problem.
I have a '94 540i and over the last couple of years the car has issued a Trans Program error and after about a minute or so has cut out completely when the temperature guage needle has crept past half-way. It has only happened 2-3 times, when the outside temperature has been over 20 degrees Celcius, 70F, and I'd been stuck in traffic. Now for the first time, this happened twice in quick succession and the last time whilst wet, cold and windy, 5-6 Celcius. The routine has been that when the car cuts out, I wait for half an hour or so, whilst the engine cools, start up again and drive on with the problem not occurring again for months. So I can't really live with this anymore.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be happening?
Thanks,

Peter
