Subject: Re: All season tire recommendation for 1998 E36 M3?

It's so lonely on the M3 board that I will answer my own post. :)

With winter coming on I went and bought four Michelin Pilot Sport A/S (All Season) tires. My observations:

1. Dry - excellent - as expected. They also don't seem to pull from side to side from groves in the roads as much as my old tires.

2. Rain - a major improvement over my bald summer Khumo's (to be expected). I would have to really put my foot down on a bend to get any slippage. They will hold well under any driving I will need to do.

3. Snow - went to a ski resort this week (Hemlock Valley) and made it there and back. This was with minus 2 degrees Celsius weather, and heavy snow coming down on compacted snow and ice pack. Struggled a bit up hills on icy patches but they performed amazingly well as there were SUV's and other more suitable vehicles stuck on the side of the road.

Notwithstanding #3, I seldom plan to use it in snow...but had to as we couldn't fit everyone in my fiance's car. At least now I know I can drive in minor snowfall conditions whereas before it would have been a disaster. I have to sign off now and wash the car and promise to keep it in the Los Angeles weather it is accustomed to from where it originated!

(Side note - my fiance drives a Toyota Prius - we put cable style chains on her tires {$60 from Lordco autoparts in Vancouver BC} and she plowed up the hill and around the resort like a tractor. Highly recommended if anyone takes their cars to the mountains. They are quite easy to put on compared to the old style classic chains one puts on trucks like a Ford F350 etc. Takes about 15 minutes).

As for noise - They seem fine, but I won't know until the summer when the top is down, but this way I will live that long at least!

Pricing - for those of you in Canada, take note. The best price and availability was Costco, however, I got them for $842 + tax at Costco in Bellingham WA which was about $240 cheaper than the same tires at Costco in Canada! With the dollar at par the 45 minute journey south from Vancouver was a no brainer. Almost everyone putting on tires there was from Canada.

Adrian.
