It grates on my nerves when my fellow citizens toss out generalities about cultures and countries they know nothing about, based mainly on what they hear through various highly-dubious sources (like talk radio and internet blogs).

Some stripes continually bleat that France is a nation of surrender monkeys, Canada is a socialist wasteland, on and on and on. Yet most don't even hold passports, so how would they know?

Even some who do travel do so as Americans only, and really don't have open minds. It's embarrassing and distressing.

I don't mean to suggest cloudnine is guilty of this, since he has spent time in Canada. But if Americans were a little more open minded about the rest of the world it wouldn't hurt them, would it?

I think factoring in local (municipal and state) taxes and the high cost of insurance, cost of living in the States as a percentage of income is substantially higher than most other developed nations.
