Talk to Jerome. He visited a couple of years ago before making his move to the US and should have excellent opinions on differences. Climate here is temperate... not sure how that compares to ZA but we get quite a bit of rain, very little snow or subzero temps, but lots of options close by: ocean, mountains, proximity to US.
Jerome visited in the Spring se he was exposed to pretty dreary weather but the whole winter can be like that... overcast, cold, and wet.
Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba are pretty cold in winter but quite hot in summer. 40C temps are common all summer but so are -40 in winter... but not lately. A spurt of -20 seems the norm with averages much warmer with little snow.
Ontario west of Thunder bay is pretty cold and stormy but great for anyone interested in outdoors types of activities like hunting and fishing... but that is true of the northern portion of most of the country. By 'northern anything 100 km off of the 49th parallel qualifies.
I haven't lived in southern Ontario and east so my opinion of that, Quebec, the Maritimes is useless.

I don't know the same things that you don't know.
