Subject: 1998 528i - random overheating

Hello all,

Before I completely replace the cooling system parts, I'd like to know if there is anything more to check. I am not sure I want to keep the car, so I don't want to get caught fixing everything at this time. I've got 168K miles on the car.

My car overheats (at least the guage indicates this - the car doesn't feel hot) when idling, climbing hills (sometimes). Most often right after I fill my gas tank, drive away and stop at the next traffic light. - but not always. It never "always" indicates overheating.

The aux fan does not come on on its own. With A/C on on a warm day, still not.

If I jumper the sensor on the side of the radiator the aux fan works effortlessly in the two speeds.

I changed the sensor and the aux fan still does not work.

All fuses associated with the aux fan have been checked, even the 50A behind the glove box - no apparent failures.

I have spent the last day taking the air out of the radiator. Followed past instructions. No loss of coolant. no apparent leaks.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance and I'm really sorry to push this question again.

Regards,

Don
