Subject: To assume that Macs don't get hacked or get viruses...

is to assume that Macs are completely perfect. Let's not forget that Macs, like any other device, are designed, built, and used by human beings. Also if they WERE perfect, there would be no need for Apple to regular issue updates and fixes, or for their timely updates of OS X.

Several Mac users disregarded Apple's warning when Boot Camp (the Apple software application that allows Intel-based Mac's to boot into XP or OS X) was in beta to back up their software BEFORE installing the beta. These users then discovered that they were unable to boot back into OS X! It was well publicized a couple of years ago. These users then had no choice to but to wipe out their entire hard drive and reinstall OS X.

It's like not carrying auto insurance thinking you will NEVER have an auto accident. If you think it can't happen to you, it probably will at the worst possible time.
