It is difficult to say what happened - and the fact that you disconnected the battery means that the original fault codes are no longer present.

Since the transmission warning lamp is no longer on is probably good in that it is not detecting any serious fault condition - but that does not necessarily mean that there is not some internal physical issue that will cause further problems.

I would check to see what codes are currently in memory, and perhaps have a diagnostic run. Then clear the codes and see if any return after a period of a few weeks.

You should also have the transmission oil checked - for both the proper level, and also condition (checking for burnt smell, consistency and also debris.


Regarding your habit of shifting between N&D.
BMW warn against several forms of operation for automatics that can cause excessive clutch wear and other damage - they are:

- Accelerating the engine in N and then engaging D.
- Using the transmission like a manual by holding it in each gear to the max RPM before shifting.
- Frequent shifting between N & D in stop and go traffic.
