I can't help you with a diagnosis, but I had a very similar thing happen about 5-6 months ago. I was out & the trans warning came up it was like I didn't have 1st or 2nd gear. I disconnected the battery to reset & the car drove fine but had the CE light on which went off after a couple of days. When I got around to having the codes read a week later there were none stored even though the light was on for a couple of days after the reset.

The only difference is I didn't have any strange noises. I put mine down as a freak electronic glitch rather than a big problem, hopefully yours is the same thing.
