Subject: Dim Area on Instrument Panel Display, is this normal?

My main instrument panel (speed, tach, etc.) appears to have a dim area between the inner speed numbers of 120-200 km/h. I thought this meant I had a blown light bulb, however, after removing the assembly, replacing the three main bulbs (which tested fine anyway) and checking the others, I cannot find a blown bulb that would be responsible.

So, now I am wondering if this is the normal display appearance at night and I am just being overly critical of it? If someone could share their observations of their display that would be great, thanks.

(By the way, I saw posts that said that you didn't need to take the steering wheel off to get the panel out, however, on my M3 {which I believe is the same inside as 3xx series E36's} you definitely have to take off the wheel per the Bentley service manual's instructions. If anyone else attempts this you may be interested to find, like me, that a T-25 bit seems to work better than the recommended T-30 for initial loosening of the torque screws behind the steering wheel that hold the air bag assembly in.)
