Subject: 'Front shocks dead' - 'Needs control arm bushings' - What now?

I took my 1994 325i to my trusty mechanic (who I bought the car from), and, as suspected, I need suspension work.

On the report:

"Front shocks dead ($380 parts + $288 labor)
Needs control arm bushings ($84 parts + $135 labor)
Needs serp. belts ($100 parts/labor)"

The belts I'm not too surprised about either. Those are the cheaper thing to get done. However, I'm confused about the suspension.

What kind of suspension do I have on this car? It's currently OEM. By "shocks dead," what does this entail in terms of parts? My rears are also pretty squeaky, so couldn't I just buy a decent suspension kit for around $600?

Also, what about the control arm bushings? From what my friend says, they're not likely to come with the kit, and will likely have to be ordered from the dealer.

Any links or info you guys can provide me? I'm minimally car-mechanically-oriented, but have enough engineering wherewithal to know what you're talking about (sort of).

Thanks.
