Seems very real to me. The more you look into it, the harder it is to deny.

The leaders claim that there is no plan to merge the countries. Word play! The province of Quebec was declared a "seperate and disctinct country" within Canada a year or two back. They still use the same currency, follow the same laws, pay taxes to the same government. There is no real border. So, Canada, the US, and Mexico, may very well remain seperate countries - as much as quebec is seperate!
