Subject: Re: 01 540i - remote keys quit working

It may not be a straight forward issue - another operational fact that may be involved is the blocking circuit.

When the keys are initialised the system downloads a different security "code word" to each key. It then knows the "range" of code numbers to expect from each key.

Each time you hit a button on the key the code word is incremented by the key, and by the car if the key is within range. If the key is out of range then the next time a signal is received by the car from that key the car checks that the code word is within a "range" of the previous codes - and will acknowledge the key (after further checks) as long as the code words are not out of sync by more than 1000 codes.

Also - if the car receives signals with security codes that have not been assigned to the keys that have been initialised by that car, then it assumes that is is being "scanned" and will activate the blocking operation.

If the car receives 10 or more signals from foreign keys (or signals of the correct frequency that do not have the correct code word) then it blocks the reception of ALL incoming signals (even from correct keys) for the next 15 minutes.

So there is additional logic in the software that may be affecting the operation.

Cheers
Jim Cash
