I would go with 17's. The larger the wheel, the smaller the sidewall of the correct size tire. (this makes for improved handling, and a stiffer ride) You'll feel it if you run over a dime, and steering will be improved as well.

17s are a good compromise with respect to handling / performance upgrading without sacrificing too much ride comfort- again, on a non-M car. (m-cars ride like log wagons, but will 'stick' like you wouldnt believe on curves.)
