My dad is a very skilled and knowledgeable 'automotive person.' I'd call him a mechanic but he is no longer one by profession.

He used to be a mechanic, but got sick and tired of crap employers so underwent a career change. He used to be part of my uncles (his brother) crew at Bonneville Salt Flats and was part of the experience when my uncles race car set world land speed records, one of which I still think he holds...

Currently, my uncle is sponsor of the North American Eagle Project. http://www.landspeed.com/

Anyways, my family never had a lot of dough, until my dad went through school to get a better job. We had a 1980 Lincoln Mark VI as a family vehicle, which became my car before I bought my 750, a 89 Crown Victoria, and later some other junkers. My parents currently own a 2006 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer. My dad, however, has helped me with a lot of fine tuning, if you will, with my 750, which he has never physically seen to the best of my knowledge before I bought mine, so I don't know where he's pullin out all this info about my car...

Some are even surprised that I do all my own mechanic work (maybe no one on here thought). I'm rather proud of the fact that I've done all the mechanic work on my 750 without the labour of my dad thus far...although I've bombarded him with a few indepth, technical questions... I guess it's the thought that BMW's are soooooo expensive to maintain, that anyone who doesn't make gobs of cash can't afford one, let alone the thought that the car is somehow sooooo complex that you need some special 7-year masters degree to work on them. They are complex, but not to the extent that they can't be done without the dealerships help.

A good mechanic doesn't nessesarily drive a nice car. And a terrible mechanic doesn't nessesarily own rust bucket either. There are some dishonest and 'not very knowing' mechanic that have nice vehicles as a result of their dishonesty, and there are some people that struggle to get by to make an honest and decent living for their families, and to those guys (and girls) should get the recognition for pouring their heart and souls out to put the needs of others ahead of their own.
