I have lived without it for several years. Opened on day (sometimes it does get cold here) and something snapped. Closes fine, stays flat, but does not lock. Not worth fixing IMO. Always be cautious when things are cold and ice. I have broken more than 1 windshield wiper mechanism, when motor was not frozen and blades were. A Real PIA. Reverse also true. Super hot day last year and dumb me I hosed a windshield. Crack crack - new windshield time, then again old one was pitted I tell myself. Since you apparently live in Frozen North, here is another thought. Check all the hoses you run across, especially the ends for cracks and funcky clamps and take preventive action, especially anything that carries water, or gas, including heater hoses. Just a thought. Stay warm.
