Hello RC,

Well it sounds like you have a serious problem on your hands....is the vehicle a CPO? If it is the dealer should take care of the problem for you at their cost. Did you look into the history of this vehicle? The problem sounds like it has been there for a long time and the dealer may had known about it before selling the vehicle to you in that condition...Good Luck getting them to admit that of course. I have a 02 745i as well and have not encountered any problems with it so far. You should also check to make sure that all recalls had been taken care of as well. Make sure you document all visits and frequency of visits to the dealership in case it is a true lemon. How much did you pay for the vehicle and have you put many miles on it? If not very much you may have a case to argue. The recall info are below:

Vehicle: 2002 BMW 7 Series
Defect Description:
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP RUNS AT A ROTATIONAL SPEED THAT COULD RESULT IN REDUCED LUBRICATION OF ITS INTERNAL COMPONENTS. OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, WEAR-INDUCED INTERNAL DAMAGE TO THE FUEL PUMP COULD RESULT IN INSUFFICIENT FUEL SUPPLY TO THE ENGINE WHEN THE FUEL TANK CONTAINS ONE-THIRD OR LESS OF ITS MAXIMUM FUEL CAPACITY.

Consequence of Defect:
IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR, THE ENGINE COULD STALL AND NOT BE RESTARTED UNTIL MORE FUEL WAS ADDED TO THE FUEL TANK. THIS COULD OCCUR EVEN THOUGH THE FUEL GAUGE INDICATED THAT FUEL STILL REMAINED IN THE TANK.

Corrective Action:
DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE FUEL PUMP CONTROL SYSTEM. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 28, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-332-4269.

Nature of Defect:
2. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING Recall Number: 03V240000
Dates Manufactured: OCT 2001 to APR 2003
Number of Vehicles Affected: 5470
Date Owners Notified On: N/A

Vehicle: 2002 BMW 7 Series
Defect Description:
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, DUE TO A SOFTWARE ERROR, A DESYNCHRONIZATION OF THE VALVETRONIC MOTORS FOR ENGINE BANKS I AND II MAY OCCUR. IF THIS OCCURS, THE ENGINE COULD STALL.

Consequence of Defect:
IN THOSE CASES, THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE. DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL OF ENGINE ROUGHNESS, OR STALLING, AS WELL AS TRAFFIC CONDITIONS AND THE DRIVER-ĘS REACTIONS, THIS COULD LEAD TO A CRASH.

Corrective Action:
DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE DIGITAL ENGINE MANAGEMENT CONTROL UNIT. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JULY 8, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.

On 11-03-06, a SIB was issued to recall and replace the engine breather valves: 00-56-138(5) WP1 DC 00-11-27-02-00DL

On 12-13-05, a SIB was issued to replace all 8 ignition coils: 00-56-689(5) DC 00-12-10-02 CW

Good Luck...

Wayne
