Unfortunately it is not just a dirty potentiometer. The volume goes up sometimes when you turn it down or vice versa. Often it does nothing. The previous owner had it checked into at the BMW dealership and they said there was nothing they could do. Having an electronics background I may well take it apart and investigate if I am faced with possible replacement anyway. Thanks for the suggestion though.
