My saturday afternoon cruise in my newly aquired used E39 was a moment to remember when I ran into one of the russian guys I call "the mob" in duluth, MN. As always I was kinda scared to take on this particular E31, first I respected it and second the car has more mods on it than a ricer.
We pulled up to the stop light on 2nd st. and started chatting about how he wanted to sell his car due to an upcoming visit to Mother Russia, I told him we had to test his cars' power since he was soo confident about it. Sure enough as the light turned green we started to roll, neck in neck, then I heard that explosive remus exhaust of his, instinctively I shifted to 4th gear and slammed the throttle. I should mention I am driving my e39 on Michelin Alpine snow tires as they are the only tires that came with the car and he ofcourse summer tires, I don't know if this helped me or not but amid the smoke we left behind I heard him shift and saw him gain about half a car lenght on me, then something amazing happened, I have never felt a car shift in an auto in this fashion before but my car downshifted for about 3 seconds then upshifted by which time he was almost 3/4 car lenght behind me. This continued for about 3 blocks and after it was apparent I beat him I let of the throttle at about 90Mph and I swear to god I never felt the speed!!! He caught up a few seconds later obviously still racing and threw me a thumbs up, my gurl who was clutching her purse as if it would save her inan accident hit my arm for racing then followed it with a "good job, I never liked that guy............"
