Subject: E31, E32 & E38 Supercharger (up to 450hp)

Hey Guys,

Was on Roadfly and got in trouble for trying to spark some interest in getting a supercharger project together. Here is the info I have gathered so far. So far we have about 6 serious people from Roadfly 8 series forum and need a total of 10 to get this custom SC going. Just curious if there are some pmembers on here that would want to participate with us in this project?

If they can indeed do this project for $8k/each, that would be by far the best deal around. Comments/questions - please chime in, especially on the setup being proposed Thanks in advance.

PS: Please note due to M70/M73 engine similarites ESS feels it wouldn't be too hard to offer this to E32 and E38 owners as well, allowing more people to participate.

Hi there,

Noticed some older posts indicated you could install/make a supercharger for an 8 series. Do you still do this? If so, what's the cost etc. Thanks for your time.

We never went through with that project since the interest was to low.

That's too bad. How many takers would you have to have to make it viable? There seemed to be interest on the www.roadfly.com (8 series board) over the last few years.

As it is, looks like only koenig does this add-on for about 18k EURO.

It could be done a lot cheaper. We planned on using 2 ASA TM3-12 clutched SC units, 12 larger fuel injectors, perfectly tuned ECU software and 6-8PSI boost for a total power in the 5.4L CI in the 440-450HP range. We would however need 10 commited people to do this custom project. Price will be around USD 8K complete with everything.

Hey Guys-

Here are some of the questions from members regarding the SC project and answers as well. The more we can deal with objections, the closer we are to making this a reality.

1. No, there is no space for efficient intercooling at a reasonable price, and it would also require 2 aftercooler units due to the separated induction to both banks (twin SC). Since boost is only in the 6-8PSI range, running non-IC is not a problem at all and will work fine in temperatures up to 120+ F. You will loose some power in very hot temperatures, but this is mostly noticed above 90F and power will still be way above stock.

2. Yes, the ASA TM3-12's are capable of 350HP each, so it is possible to build the engine and make 500+ HP. We will however only supply a 440-450HP bolt-on kit for stock engines, any further modifications is on your own.

3. From the experience we have with the x40's all drivetrain related components are very good and have never been a problem, I don't see why this would be any different on the 850. We will obviously test this heavily, and restrict power to a safe level for stock drivetrains.

4. CARB certification is very time consuming and expensive, therefore it makes no sense for us to do this on a low volume kit. The kit will however be tuned to pass all tailpipe sniff tests, so it's only the visual it might fail.

Hi Asbjorn,

Thanks for your patience with all the questions - they arise, as you can imagine, with such a project.

1) Would the supercharger custom project include an intercooler?. This would be especially important to those who live in hotter climates as we've heard that without the intercooler, almost all the gains are lost above 70 degrees. Is this accurate?

2) Would it be possible to break the 500hp barrier or would that be asking too much with the proposed setup?

3) Some of the concerns involve transmission (4hp24), driveshaft and flexdiscs, motor mounts - are you able to elaborate on why these may or may not be an issue?.

4) Based on your last email, it sounds like it would not be CARB approved and not have an a EO number available, correct? If so, this would pretty much not allow any California owners to take part.

Thanks again!

Chris

1. Possibly. we will make it to fit the 8 series engine bay. Since this is the one with least amount of room it might fit the E32/E38's as well. They do run the same software.

2.It will be tuned to pass the tailpipe sniff test, CARB certification is to expensive for such a low number kit.

3.We would have to work out the numbers, but anything below 7500 is going to be hard since the kit will use 2 SC units.

4.We will do all prototype testing and durability testing in house, so the final kit should be completely bug free. We will offer a 2yr/unlimited mileage warranty.

5. 25% deposit, final due on completion.

6.We have very good experience with the 5HP24, the 4HP24 we have not worked with, but I do not think it should be a problem to increase torque by ~30%.

7.R&D would be done in Europe, so that would be hard to ship a car over.

Hi Asbjorn,

Thanks for all of your info. The possibility of getting off the ground is starting to gather more enthusiasm. As a result, a few more questions have come up.

1) Since the M70 and M73's are also found in the E32 & E38's respectively, would the custom supercharger we are talking about also work for these models. If so, that could certainly raise the # of people interested.

2) Will it pass CA smog/emissions test

3) What kind of discounts would be possible if we could get that number to 15, 20, 25 or more?

4) Since First times are typically plagued with bugs, what do you guys guarantee in terms of tech support, warranty etc.

5) Would there be a financing option or would it just be deposit, then final payment due upon completion?

6) Can 4HP24 handle all that extra hp/tq?

7) If we were to supply a donor car (850) how much might that reduce costs for the group?

Thanks!

Chris

Hey Guys-

Sorry for the delay - I was waiting to hear back from ESS. Apparently, the custom supercharger would work on both the M70 and M73 (see email trail below).

It seems there are about 5 or 6 people interested initially. Any chance we can get a few more out there to make this happen? :)

Chris

Hi Asbjorn,

Would this custom supercharger in question be able to work for both the 850i (M70 Motor) and 850ci (M73 Motor)? Hoping we can get some more interest, but that was the first question posed. Thanks,

Chris

Yes, hardware would be almost the same, and we can make software for both.
