E36 M3's were like a$$holes, everyone's got one.
Take your 7 grand and keep your e46 with your service history and and upgrade the parts to be what you want it to be. The E36 will hold a higher value later on but a well tuned e46 tastefully done will keep heads turned and may be close to the value if kept in excellent mech condition.

Brakes and other suspension upgrades can be had from the e46 m3 from ebay for relatively low cost.
Your power out can be increased past the E36 M3 for reasonable dollar amounts and your insurance will be slightly lower as compared to the M3.
