Subject: How I fixed my subframe

I also had this common brake of the subframe on my E28 533i which has the same subframe. My 81 635csi does not have this problem since it has an e12 suspension.

Anyway I fixed the broken mount by supporting the engine with an engine hoist then removed control arms and the like, leaving steering box hanging not having to remove it.

Once I had the subframe out I ground off the remaining welds of the old bracket. I then took a flat 5mm thick washer that fit exactly inside the hole that the bracket sat over and TIG welded into place.

I then found a round piece of aluminum 15mm round 30mm tall that is used on all E32 or E34 BMWs which is found in the same place as the old bracket on my e28. BMW simply uses this piece of aluminum instead of the week bracket. I then simply put the bolt through the hole attatching to the steering box and subframe.

Fixed forever.

Another note I then upgraded my lower and upper control arms to Meyle Heavy Duty units and replaced tie rod assemblies center link and pitman arms.

I found this fix very easy if you have access to a wire feed welder and trust your welding abilities. Always test your welds with a good solid blow of a hammer to test for strength.
